Child welfare discourses and practices in Czech lands

the segregation of Roma and disabled children during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries

Segregation of Roma children and children with disabilities in the Czech Republic remains a highly criticized issue. The discourse and practices concerning Roma children and children with disabilities have been a political issue to a considerable extent and no comprehensive perspective has been applied. Based on current research findings in the field of child care, the project brings an innovative method combining theoretical discursive analysis tools with an analysis of institutional eugenics and its rhetoric of marginalization and segregation. Better understanding of the current situation can only be achieved through the reflection of discourses and ways of caring for children, the development of reflexive tools and the reconsideration of the role of academic communities.
