You can apply for a double-subject Bachelor study programme in the field of English: a combination of Lower Secondary School Teacher Training in English Language and Literature and another study programme in accordance with the subjects offered for the Entrance Examinations in a given year.
The program also offers a great opportunity to progress to a Master’s Degree course for those wishing to combine the career of an English Teacher at Primary/Language Schools with another subject.

Who is Eligible
All graduates of secondary school (whether a grammar or technical school) are eligible to apply for this programme. Note that students must apply for a certain combination of subjects (e.g., English and History) and must meet the requirements of the other department.
Qualification of the Graduates
Graduates may be English language assistants in language schools, leisure time establishments, and nursery schools. The degree does not confer qualifications for teaching at basic or secondary schools. For that, students need to complete a master’s degree program such as one of our Učitelství programmes.
There are two entrance exams: the Learning Potential Test (TSP in Czech) and an exam on the English language. The percentiles of the applicants in both tests will be used to determine who gets accepted. More information on the TSP can be found on Masaryk University’s page on the TSP.
The entrance exam on the English language consists of a multiple-choice test on vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and text comprehension, as well as a few questions about life and culture in English-speaking countries that will investigate the basic orientation of the applicants.
The recommended initial level is level B2 according to the CEFR, which corresponds to upper-intermediate or the international exam First Certificate in English (though no certificate can replace the entrance exam).

Expected Entering Level of English
Students are expected to be at least at the level of B2 according to the CEFR. In order to successfully finish the disciplines in this degree programme, it is necessary for the student to have good knowledge and skills in the following fields:
- Spoken interaction: competence in naturally starting, maintaining, and ending conversations; in expressing feelings of various intensities; in being able to provide clear and detailed descriptions and information on many topics; in being able to explain an attitude towards a problem; in providing advantages and disadvantages of possible individual solutions.
- Listening comprehension: competence in comprehensively understanding everything that is being spoken in standard spoken language; in understanding most the radio documentaries if they are in standard spoken language; and in identifying the speaker’s mood, tone, etc.
- Reading comprehension: to be able to rapidly grasp the content and the significance of news, articles and reports on various topics, and to decide if a closer reading is worthwhile; to be able to understand articles and reports on current problems in which the writers express specific attitudes and points of view; to be able to estimate the meaning of unknown words with the help of context.
- Strategies and means of language: the ability to use standard phrases in order to gain time for the right formulation; the ability to be aware of “common mistakes” and to try to avoid them when speaking; the ability to pass on detailed information reliably; the ability to produce stretches of language with a fairly even tempo without noticeable pauses.
- Writing: to be able to summarize information from different sources and media and to explain a specific problem in a composition or report, emphasizing decisive points and including supporting details; to be able to write about events and real or fictional experiences in a detailed and easily readable way.
- Orientation in basic life and civilization: general knowledge of life and culture in English-speaking countries on the level of a school-leaving examination from English language (e.g., K. Veselý: Reálie anglicky mluvících zemí [Life and civilization in English speaking countries], Prague: SPN, 1983): including, a basic geographic orientation, a concise historical development, the structure of the political system, significant representatives of Anglo-Saxon culture, art and literature, good knowledge of traditions and lifestyles of Anglo-Saxon countries, and awareness of current events.
