Mission Statement

The Department of English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Education aims to provide high quality, liberal education for future teachers of English in an inspiring, challenging, and productive environment. Emphasis is equally placed on: the development of professional competencies and appropriate subject and pedagogical content knowledge; the ability to apply them in diverse settings; and the adoption of values essential in forming an active, responsible, and independent member of the community.

In order to achieve these aims, the Department strives to:

  • promote intellectual growth in students by encouraging critical thinking and supporting inquiring minds;
  • increase social awareness;
  • develop communication and collaboration;
  • stress an integrated approach to learning that both encompasses interdisciplinary studies and reaches beyond the classroom;
  • encourage self-evaluation and reflection;
  • create lifelong dedication to learning;
  • equip students with a proficiency in:
    • English Language,
    • Linguistics,
    • British and American Literature,
    • Cultural Studies,
    • ELT Methodology;
  • inspire creativity and resourcefulness;
  • encourage the use and application of technology as an educational medium;
  • support meaningful and applied research, particularly in the area of materials and methods development;
  • guarantee a respectful and inclusive environment.
